Arriving in Paro and do some sightseeing. You will visit National Museum, housed in the Ta Dzong (watchtower) has interesting collection of artefacts provide a wonderful introduction to the rich culture and heritage of the Kingdom. Next will be Paro Dzong, is a fine example of Bhutanese historic architecture and this fortress was built in 1645. Now a day the fortress is divided into two sections, one for religious sector and another for administration.
Hike to Taktshang monastery as good acclimatization for the trek. Taktshang Monastery (Tiger Nest) is located at top of about 900 meter cliff in Paro. It takes slightly more than an hour and a half to reach the monastery on foot from the nearest road point.
Today’s trail is a long but fairly gentle ascent. A clear day offers a bird’s eye view of Paro valley. Camp is at 3536 m. (10 km)
Walk through thick alpine forests and rhododendron trees. In winter yaks graze in the pastures along the path and around the campsite. (Altitude 3627 m, 10 km)
Today’s trek follows mountain ridges with spectacular views of distant valleys and mountain ranges. The camp is near the Jimilangtso Lake at about 3706 m. (11 kms)
The path continues past dwarf rhododendron trees, the Janetsho Lake and through yak herders’ camps. Camp by the Semkotha Lake at an altitude of around 3834 m. (11 kms)
The day begins with a gradual climb. If weather permits there will be a beautiful view of Mount GangkharPuensum, Bhutan’s highest mountain, as well as of further peaks from the DoupchuLa Pass. The path gradually descends to PhajodingGompa, where a monastery and retreat centres for meditation are located. Camp at about 3536 m. (10 kms)
The final day’s trail to Thimphu descends steeply through blue pine forests (2 to 3 hours)
