The word ‘Kovalam’ is derived from a Malayalam word, which means ‘a grove of coconut trees’. This name is given to the town since it has abundance of groves of coconut trees.

The main 3 beaches which are lined together along the coastal line of 1 Km are Lighthouse beach (Kovalam beach), Hawa beach and Samudra beach. Out of these beaches, the Lighthouse beach attracts the most. With its white sand, mesmerizing sunset, clean beach, low tidal waves and hippie culture, it is the favorite place for outsiders.

The Lighthouse beach is charachterized by its 35 meter tall Lighthouse and is one of the major tourist hotspots. The beach is the largest of all the 3 beaches in Kovalam. The Light House is located towards the southern end of the beach and it’s on a cape. This beach is mostly visited by the foreign tourists as it is most developed. The Lighthouse is placed atop a hillock called the Karumkal Hill and can be easily reached by foot. This beach is also a perfect location for various adventure sports at Kovalam beach. Swimming, surfing, parasailing and paragliding are just a few to mention which can thrill any adventure seeker.

The Hawa beach or Eve’s beach lies opposite to the Light house beach. Many tourists claim it to be the most beautiful among the beaches in Kovalam. The exquisiteness of this Kovalam beach is enhanced by the stack of palm grooves which reward a unique elegance to this place. Way back, the beachside was usually thronged by the topless European women to get a perfect tan and that’s how the place got its name Hawa beach. The beach in the early morning is found crowded with native fishermen who rely completely on the sea for their living.

Samudra beach which is a scenic jewel to Kovalam and is located towards the north most region of Kovalam beach.The beach has enormous attractive features among which the most prominent is its isolation and the feel of serenity it offers. You will never find massive crowd of tourists pouring in here. This feature alone draws lots of tourists towards the beach as they can be away from the noisy howls and rushes of their routine city life. You can enjoy complete privacy here and thus this beach has always remained as an ingredient in almost every honeymoon packages in Kovalam. This is an absolute paradise for the newly-wed and they can stay immersed in their own world of tranquillity here. Samudra beach has remained impervious to the rapid bloom of tourism and even today the beach is successful in preserving its original appeal.

Half-hour drive from Kovalam, Pozhikara Beach is where the backwaters open out to the sea. Bordered by lush greenery, fine sand and sparkling waters it is a great place to catch up on sun bathing, swimming and tasty seafood at the beachside kiosks. The rich vegetation also draws several migratory birds, and their sight is bound to be a treat for avid photographers and bird lovers.

Another tourist attraction in Kovalam is Velliyani Lake. Thiruvananthapuram’s largest fresh water lake, Velliyani, is a calm and delightful setting with clean, clear waters filled with lotus flowers. Popular for the spectacular visuals created by moonlight on these waters, the lake is also known for boat races during the annual Onam festivities. One should also visit Valiyathura Pier, a 214 meter long pier located at the ancient port of Valiyathura and is another serene and relaxing beach location near Kovalam. The pier was used by fisherman during the high tide and is now a famous spot for angling and photography.

Kovalam is best known for Honeymoon Destination in India and is considered one of the most exotic destinations to rekindle love and begin the journey of becoming ‘us’. Trivandrum Central Railway is the nearest railway head and is located at a distance of 12 km from Kovalam. Kerala State Road Transportation Services offer many buses and volvos from different parts of the state to reach Kovalam.

Kovalam can be visited at any time of the year but it would be better if you prefer the months from December through May. Monsoon in Kovalam are really wet and this would be the ideal time only if you are looking for some serious ayurvedic therapies.

  1. Day 1 Once you arrive at Trivandrum

    Once you arrive at Trivandrum, your journey starts towards the kovalam. You will be driving through one of the most scenic route in Kerala.     Later visit the Karamana river, pride of Thiruvananthapuram. Anchored on the bank of the Karamana River – Thiruvallam Boat Club offers good number of tourists activities like kayaking, houseboat cruises and canoe rides. The fun part about the boating in Karamana river is that it takes one through the expansive green patches of tropical plants. which is quite fascinating.

    In evening visit the Valiyathura Pier is located close to the Shanghumugham beach, which is 8 kilometers from the Trivandrum city center.     Today enjoy your entire day at the Pozhikkara Beach, as it is one of the most important tourist attraction near Kovalam. It is a beautiful and picturesque beaches of South India. This is the place where the backwater meets the sea.The stretches of greenery near the Pozhikkara Beach of Pachalloor makes it different and more attractive from most of the other beaches in the state.
